Daniels Graphics Announced As Best of Show Winner in the 2017 PICA Awards

Charlotte, NC — The Printing Industry of the Carolinas (PICA) announced that Daniels Graphics of Asheville is an award winner in the 2017 PICA Awards Competition. The announcement was made March 24, 2018, during the 2017 PICA Awards Banquet in Greensboro, North Carolina, with more than 250 industry professionals in attendance. The PICA Awards competition is celebrating its 52nd season and continues to be one of the largest printing contests in the nation.

This year, the PICA Awards attracted more than 580 entries from 44 printing companies, along with more than 145 entries from 5 graphic arts high schools and 5 college graphic arts programs from across the Carolinas. Daniels Graphics won the coveted Mac Papers Best of Show Award. They also won 2 Best of Category Awards (One for Wicked Weed Brewing and one for Alex Lee, Inc.) , 1 Special Judges Award (For Market Connections)  and 1 Award of Excellence (For the Swannanoa Gathering).

In addition, Daniels Graphics also won the Komori Best Booklet Award, and the Heidelberg Award for Best Printing in Division C (21‐59 employees).

The piece produced for Wicked Weed Brewing won the Best of Show award.  Elizabeth Bates, Art Director said, “We wanted to create a piece that would be used as part of a welcome package for a group of select resellers.  We wanted something that would feel special and exclusive.”

A panel of out of state judges with extensive experience in printing and print production examined the entries. Each entry was judged on its own merit in a category with similar printed pieces. The judging criteria included: registration, crossovers, clarity and neatness, sharpness of halftones and line drawings, richness and tonal qualities of color, paper and ink selection, ink coverage, difficulty of printing, effective contrast or softness, finishing, bindery, and overall visual impact.
